I have never played the previous Heroes of Might and Magic games before, so I do not know how much of an accurate representation this is of the previous games. What I can say is that HMMO is a decent MMORPG. Not great, due to the reasons I will put below, but good to kill several hours of your time if you are sick of killing Anubarak or whoever it is you enjoy killing in WOW. I will break down the review into several portions so that you guys will know what you are getting, but in my opinion, the only part you should really read is the gameplay section, because that's going to be the reason you will play this game for several hours. However, I will first go through the basics of the game.
HMMO allows you to select from several different races. Each race has 2 classes, and for aesthetic purposes you can select the sex of your character. Each race has different units at its disposal, ranging from very weak to extremely strong. However, just like in any game, weak units can generally be produced in bulk, while strong units aren't as easily produced. Troops of the same type can also band together as a single unit, which makes your grunts more than just cannon fodder. Would you rather have 30 skeletons or 10 zombies? It's questions like this that will have you thinking.
HMMO doesn't allow you to build stronger units right off the bat though. At the start of the game, you will probably have only 3 different types of units at your disposal, assuming that you upgrade your town hall as far as your resources let you at that point in time. To unlock the remaining units, you need to upgrade your town hall in order to build the unit production centres that produce those elite units. However, resources can also be used to purchase additional units as well as upgrade your unit production centres, which again leads to a dilemma. Resources can be gained by doing quests, which are a quick and fairly easy way of getting cash early in the game.
Graphics 5/10
The graphics, to put it kindly, leave much to be desired. All male characters look the same, as do the female characters, regardless of their origin. I chose to be a male Death Knight, and instead of looking like Arthas, I was rewarded with a apparently very alive man with a horrible hairdo (to be fair, I selected the hairdo). The only bonus was an undead mount, which, as far as I was concerned, was no different from a live one other than the fact that it was made of bones. The graphics in fight scenes are better, but that's still not saying much. Hopefully they polish this part up when the release the full version, but I don't think it can be improved by that much. If you wanted something like Final Fantasy XIII, look somewhere else.
Audio 7/10
The audio is surprisingly good, and will probably only get better as the updates come. There's nothing fancy about the audio, and there is no voice acting, but I found the elevator music-ish soundtrack to be surprisingly soothing. Of course, other people might give this a 4, but I found it enjoyable enough.
Gameplay 8/10
Now this is what you really want. HMMO is an MMORPG that combines a turn based combat system with non-stop player-player interaction. The essence of the game is to attack other players. Sure, you can build up your troops and all that, but the ultimate goal is to attack other players. There are few elite enemies like the Lich King in WOW that will require teamwork between several players to bring down. Instead, you will be bringing other players down. To do this you will essentially play a chess match with your victim. Combat is designed in a way reminiscent of “Advanced Wars” from the GBA and Nintendo DS. It's turn-based, with movement ranges for different units as well as having a certain number of troops in each group. However, while in “Advanced Wars” you could only have 10 troops to a group, the numbers here are much more flexible. I never went higher than 36, but I think that you could easily put 50 in a group. Like in “Advanced Wars”, when your CO could use CO powers to turn the tide of battle, in HMMO your hero can use magic. Magic differs from CO powers in that they take a much more direct approach to battle. Your hero can nuke a unit directly with magic, instead of the buffs that the CO powers gave the units in “Advanced Wars”. Buffing can also occur, so naturally there are a lot of options in warfare. However, magic is limited by the amount of mana you have, and the way I used magic, I never had enough. Using your spells wisely and manipulating your opponent into difficult situations is the way to go in the game. However, sometimes brute force works just as well.
Conclusion
Overall, I enjoyed the time I spent playing HMMO. I did not play enough to claim to be an expert in it, but I did find myself extremely immersed in it. HMMO is not the best MMO out there, but it is one of the better ones simply on the strength and addictiveness of its gameplay. If the producers can buff up the aesthetic appeal of the game, we could be looking at one of the longest lasting MMOs in the business being born.
